I liked the FBI sub-plot, but I must agree: LSL5 was undoubtedly my least favorite of the series, and it lacked some polish in many areas. Even the gameplay was a bit too simplistic, and I'm no fan of the last sequence of the game, which automatically plays without much player's involvement. Plus, the whole story about the missing floppies was a bit sloppy, in my opinion...
At least, though, this game had a story, while LSL6 - 7 simply gave up on story and relied only on the various ladies.
I do like that Patti was developed more in LSL5... make no mistake. I like that she did some "undercover work" (and keeping with the play on words that is so common in Leisure Suit Larry)... but over all, as you said, it was very simplistic... And Al Lowe said, somewhere that it is IMPOSSIBLE to get stuck (as in you didn't pick up a specific item or something, and now have to go back)... So perhaps because it was made with that intent, all the challenge was gone from it. But I disliked how all the girls were over the top with names like Jennifer Jiggle, for a wet t-shirt contest girl... I enjoy the subtly of names like Eve needing an apple, Faith remaining faithful to her boyfriend, etc...

It beats LSL3 for me, because I enjoy that keyboard playing section (I even played that tune myself). But it's very bare indeed, not as stuffed with funny jokes as LSL1, 6 or 7. A lot of the Patti sections (her dreams and her installment of the Field Location Device) made me curl my toes. And I prefer no plot like LSL 6 or 7, over a bad plot.
LSL5 is better than LSL3 in your opinion? Hrm, I would have to so strongly disagree.
